• Ensure that your front door has a BS 3621 mortice lock fitted. You can see this by a heart shaped symbol on the face of the lock. A security approved night latch with built in dead bolt, this prevents carding of the lock.
• Side and back doors to your property - ideally fit a 5 lever BS 3621 mortice lock. The addition of top and bottom bolts, with separate key is also a good idea.
• All ground floor windows should be lockable.
• Keep trellises away from windows to prevent unwanted climbers.
• Ensure shrubs at the front of the property are well kept and not too large, to prevent good hiding places.
• If possible fit lights to light up dark areas such as external corridoors, your garden. Light is a good dettarent, you can also see what you are doing.
• lock up any ladders or objects that could aid in a burglary, don't leave them out.
